Lime

Lime is stimulating and refreshing and can be relied upon for its cleansing properties. Its fresh medium intensity aroma is uplifting and calms and clears the mind. Like its relatives, grapefruit and lemon, it is a key oil for reducing water retention and puffiness. It also balances oily skin and hair.

The lime tree produces an acidic green fruit that is a popular food and drink flavoring. Lime oil, which is cold-pressed from the rind of the fruit, has a sharp citrus scent and is either pale yellow or light olive in color. Possible substitute oils include Orange, Lemon, Tangerine, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Neroli, or Petitgrain.

What is lime oil good for?

  • AIDS IN DETOX: Lime oil helps tackle cellulite and the puffiness linked to water retention. As with grapefruit oil, inhaling lime oil (diffusing or breathing over the bottle, not actually snorting oil up your nose in case that wasn't clear) has been shown to help weight loss by boosting metabolism. It is also wonderful at decongesting the lymphatic system.

  • BALANCES OILY SKIN & HAIR: Lime has a toning effect on skin and connective tissue. It helps clear oily and acne prone completions by removing dead skin cells. Added to a hair rinse, it conditions and removes excess oil to refresh the scalp. Added to lotion or skin cream, lime oil helps clear and brighten dull, congested skin. Be careful only to apply at night as it is a photosensitive oil!

  • HAS A COOLING EFFECT: Lime oil may help to relieve cold-related fevers. It also boosts the immune system and eases respiratory symptoms.

  • ACTS AS AN ANTISEPTIC: Lime's antiseptic properties helps the body's healing process of cold sores, insect bites, and cuts.

  • STRESS RELIEF: The refreshing and stimulating scent of limes helps relieve stress, exhaustion, and anxiety. It's ability to calm promotes creativity and focus. Another exciting tip is to add Lime to a carrier oil and massage it into joints experiencing discomfort or stiffness.

  • CLEANING: Lime oil works very well in removing gum, wood stain, oil, and grease spots. Put lime oil on a cotton pad and use it to wipe surfaces clean (I wouldn't use it neat on wood). It also helps remove gum and can be used to clean a dry erase board.

Lime blends well with: Bergamot, Carrot Seed, Cassia, Citronella, Clary Sage, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Neroli, Nutmeg, Orange, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Pine, Ravintsara, Rose, Rosemary, Sage, Tangerine, Tea Tree, Vetiver, & Ylang Ylang.

Try this:

  • Diffuse to help you feel inspired & uplifted and to freshen air (for variety, combine with other citrus oils)

  • Add several drops to a box of baking soda and keep in the refrigerator to absorb odors

  • Add a few drops to your Thieves Household Cleaner to vary the scent and boost cleaning power

  • Add a couple drops to a capsule and take internally

  • Combine it with olive oil to use as a marinade for meat and veggies

  • Include a drop to your stir fry to bring dimension and add depth of flavor

  • Add to berry dishes to complement their natural sweetness

  • Add 1-2 drops to your water (use glass or stainless steel container) and shake/stir well before drinking.

  • Add to your pico de gallo or salsa recipes (great with you don't have a lime on hand to squeeze fresh juice)

Lime Overview

Usage:

  • Diffuse or directly inhale.

  • Apply 1-2 drops on location, chakras, and/or Vita Flex points.

  • For use as a dietary supplement, put a few drops with an edible carrier oil into a capsule and swallow with water.

Suggested Dilution Ratio:  

  • 50-50: Dilute one part essential oil to one part carrier oil for topical or internal use.
