Introduction to CBD

Introduction to CBD

Have you ever wondered if CBD would be right for you? Do you know the benefits of CBD? Many people have misconceptions about this product and where it originated. CBD is the new frontier for plant-based wellness. It seems that CBD is everywhere you look these days, and it seems like everyone, even media and news outlets, has jumped on the CBD bandwagon.

Still, there is probably so much that you don’t know about CBD, even with all the CBD facts that are out there. CBD has a long history, but only over the last decade or so has CBD oil surged in popularity as a prominent player in the health and wellness space.

In this class, we will discover the truth about CBD, how it works, and how we can incorporate it into our everyday wellness routine.

is cbd marijuana?

Is CBD Marijuana

I am so excited to share the wonderous properties of CBD, what it is, how it works, and also dispel some common misconceptions.

A common misconception is that CBD only comes from one type of cannabis plant– marijuana. In reality, CBD is found throughout the stalks, flowers, stems, leaves, and seeds of both hemp and marijuana.

And although CBD and Marijuana come from the same plant species, known as Cannabis Sativa (or hemp), they are cultivated and used very differently.

Cannabis Sativa has over 100 cannabinoids –the active constituents of cannabis– that scientists have discovered so far.

While researchers have identified many cannabinoids, they have primarily focused their efforts on studying and understanding how CBD and THC influence the body’s systems. Many studies have explored CBD oil effects and CBD oil benefits, as scientists look to learn more about potential CBD hemp oil uses.

What distinguishes CBD oil from “pot” are these two cannabinoids.

what is cannabidiol?

What is Cannanidiol

With the rapid rise in the popularity of CBD in everything from vape juice to lattes, many people are asking- “what is CBD oil?”. To answer that question, let’s first answer the question- what is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis. While CBD is an essential component of marijuana, CBD is derived directly from the hemp plant, also known as Cannabis sativa, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. This compound is part of a complex body system called the Endocannabinoid System.

What makes CBD from hemp unique is its therapeutic properties that interact with the endocannabinoid system, specifically the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors.

the cannabinoid difference

Cannabinoid Difference

One of the biggest concerns about CBD is whether it contains THC and if using it means they are using a form of marijuana. THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. It gives a euphoric feeling, often referred to as “getting high”. THC interacts with CB1 receptors, mainly in the brain and central nervous system.

CBD does not interact with the body the same way and has no psychoactive properties. There is no euphoric feeling or altered mental state. CBD works with CB2 receptors and has more of an impact on the immune, gastrointestinal, and peripheral nervous systems. Cannabis Sativavarieties with less than 0.3% THC by dry weight are considered hemp plants. Varieties with higher levels of THC are considered marijuana plants.

Historically, hemp has been grown and used for centuries for everything from cloth and paper to lamp fuels, ropes, industrial fiber, food, and even body care products. During Colonial times, everyone was mandated to grow hemp. Presidents Washington and Jefferson both grew hemp, and it was widely grown in the United States up through the mid-twentieth century. It wasn’t until 1970 that Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act and classified hemp as a Schedule 1 drug with strict regulations for its use and cultivation. In 2018, Congress passed the Agricultural Improvement Act that removed hemp and some cannabis products from the Controlled Substances Act, thereby making it more readily available.

the endocannabinoid system

Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) was discovered in the 1990s by Dr. Rafael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University in Israel. The ECS is a regulatory system in the body that helps with brain functionality and helps to regulate the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. It assists with things like digestion, pain modulation, reproduction, stress, appetite control, mood, temperature control, and even memory. This is a complex system that is undergoing further research. It has become the new frontier for plant-based medicines.

The ECS works by regulating messages that are sent throughout the body. When your brain wants to send a message to the body it releases a chemical called a neurotransmitter. This neurotransmitter is released from a neuron (pre-synaptic). Once this message is released, it must reach across a gap, called a synapse, to the next neuron (post-synaptic). When the message is received it excites that neuron, which then allows the message to continue moving from neuron to neuron until it reaches its final destination.

When the neurotransmitter excites the neuron, it interacts with cannabinoid receptors acting as locks that can only be unlocked with a specific set of keys. There are more receptors for CBD in our body than any other kind of receptor. Two of the most well-known receptors in this system are CB1 and CB2. When the post-synaptic neuron receives a message, it activates these cannabinoid receptors and sends a message back in the opposite direction. It often limits the response of the first neuron so that less of the neurotransmitter is released. This action affects how the messages are sent, received, and processed, and it also helps to regulate the processes of the body creating homeostasis, or balance.

Dr. Mechoulam also discovered that we can also make our own cannabinoids – Anandamide and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). Anandamide is a cannabinoid that we create when we're meditating; often referred to as the bliss molecule. In addition to anandamide, mothers release the cannabinoid called 2-AG in their milk when a child is breastfeeding, creating a sense of contentment and calm in a nursing child that we refer to as the "milk coma." You know that point when you're running, and suddenly, you're in bliss, you break through a wall, and now you feel fantastic? It's called the Runner's High, and these two cannabinoids are responsible for that sensation.

Besides the calming and euphoric effects of cannabinoids, they can also positively influence the central nervous system, the immune system, the gastrointestinal system, hormone balance, metabolism, and the health of connective tissue and bone.

Endocannabinoid System 2

Let's break down the word "Endocannabinoid."

"Endo" is short for "endogenous," which means that it occurs naturally inside of your body. "Cannabinoid" comes from "cannabis," and cannabis-based compounds that work together with the body achieve balance.

So "endocannabinoid" just means cannabis-like substances that naturally occur inside us.

Our bodies are naturally designed to interact with CBD and other naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds throughout the body.

CBD MAY HELP YOU MANAGE A CANNABINOID DEFICIENCY

A relatively new theory speculates that supplementing the body with plant-based cannabinoids from CBD could possibly be beneficial for addressing a nutritional deficiency.

This theory, called the clinical endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome (CECD), attempts to explain why in some cases the endocannabinoid system is unable to properly keep the body balanced. It proposes that a deficiency in cannabinoids can lead to a dysfunction in the endocannabinoid system. The theory was initially introduced in 2001 by EB Russo.

Americans may be at a greater risk for being depleted of cannabinoids since cannabis, both marijuana and hemp, were prohibited in the 1930s. Eliminating hemp from the diet may have contributed to cannabinoid deficiency issues.

Adding CBD oil to your daily routine could, the theory suggests, augment the body’s own cannabinoids and help the endocannabinoid system effectively balance the body.

cannabinoid receptors

Cannabinoid Receptors

There are two primary receptors, CB1 and CB2, within the Endocannabinoid System that are responsible for CBD's effects. Let's take a look at their key locations. You can see from this image that they are literally everywhere!

what is homeostasis?

Homeostasis

Our body is like a mobile –  a kinetic sculpture constructed of body systems that balance each other through pivot points to achieve equilibrium or homeostasis.

Poor diet choices, pharmaceutical use, stress, lack of sleep, toxic exposure, and negative emotions can act as weights on the mobile, upsetting the balance of the related body systems. To reach homeostasis, the counterbalancing system overcompensates, causing distress in the body.

CBD can help!

CBD binds to these pivot points, known as Endocannabinoid Receptors (CB1 and CB2), to naturally restore balance in the body.

full spectrum versus isolate

Smart Spectrum

There are two main types of CBD available on the market; full-spectrum and isolate. Knowing the difference between the two kinds of CBD is essential to understanding the value of Nature's Ultra Smart Spectrum™ CBD.

Full Spectrum CBD

A full-spectrum product still comes from the same cannabis sativa plant but must contain less than 0.3% THC. Full-spectrum or “whole-plant” products contain everything the cannabis plan includes. That means they contain CBD as well as flavonoids, the natural fatty acids found in hemp, terpenes, and other cannabinoids such as trace amounts of THC. The downside is the small amount of THC can cause a person to fail a drug test. Some individuals are also more susceptible to the effects of THC and may have a negative experience.

All these naturally-occurring elements create something called the “entourage effect.” This is the effect of cannabinoids and terpenes working together in perfect synergy. The benefits of a full-spectrum oil are the terpenes that create a synergistic effect in the body when combined with CBD.

CBD Isolate

CBD Isolate is typically the CBD product of choice for those who are sensitive to other cannabinoids such as THC. Isolates are just that – CBD isolated from all othercannabinoids. CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. Supercritical CO2 Extraction is used to remove everything from the product except the CBD compounds. This leaves you with a product with 0.00% THC. Because it is an isolate, there are no trace amounts of THC, which means it will not interact with drug testing. By isolating the CBD compounds we can ensure safety, purity, and therapeutic value of the CBD. When choosing an isolate, it’s imperative to verify purity.  There are lower purity options that may still have trace amounts that will show up in a lab test. This small percentage of THC is usually negligible, but it's always something to be aware of for those who may need to pass a drug test.

Smart Spectrum™

Smart Spectrum™ from Nature's Ultra and Young Living is organic-grown cannabis (hemp), extracted using a proprietary CO2 extraction method. This extraction method separates the CBD without harsh chemicals, to produce a pure CBD isolate with 0.00% THC.

In order to get a synergistic effect describe above, we can use therapeutic grade essential oils to add terpenes back to the product thereby creating a controlled broad spectrum CBD.  The pure CBD isolate is paired with powerful Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils, high in terpenes, to create a full-spectrum CBD with enhanced synergistic effects on the body with zero risks. This CBD is truly one-of-a-kind!

what are terpenes?

What Are Terpenes

If you’ve ever caught a whiff of citrus, lavender, or peppermint, you’ve smelled terpenes at work. Terpenes are fragrant molecules that give plants, flowers, and trees their wide range of scents, from earthy and floral to citrusy. And it turns out they’re also good for your health!

Inhaling the scent of certain plant terpenes have is associated with a boost in emotional well-being. The sweet, floral scent of the terpene linalool, for instance, found in lavender, has a calming, soothing effect. Limonene, a terpene found in citrus fruits and peppermint, has a mood-elevating impact, while pinene, found in sage and conifers has been shown to aid inalertness and memory retention. The terpene beta-caryophyllene found in basil, oregano, black pepper, and cannabis has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pain-relieving benefits.

Terpenes work with our endocannabinoid system to significantly influence our body's ability to maintain homeostasis without producing adverse side effects.

https://youtu.be/bN3QRSjCnS8

Terpenes are the key to getting the synergistic effect with your CBD. Terpenes are aromatic hydrocarbons that are found in the essential oils of a plant. They effect the CB1 and CB2 receptors and neurotransmitters in the brain. Some of the most common terpenes are Myrcene, Limonene, Caryophyllene, Terpineol, Menthol and Linalool. Like cannabis, essential oils are full of beneficial terpenes that can be added to CBD isolate to magnify its ability to balance the mind and body. Combining these two powerful products, CBD and therapeutic-grade essential oils, makes them even more powerful by using them together.

what makes nature’s ultra special?

Not all CBD is created equal.

Despite common product claims, many CBD products on the market do not contain actual CBD, may contain ingredients that are harmful to your health, or may not even be legal. You want to do your homework before you use CBD to know where it comes from!

CBD, provided it is derived from hemp, is federally legal in the United States. While a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling had allowed hemp CBD and hemp CBD oil manufacturers to operate for years without interference, the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill in late December eliminated any confusion of hemp CBD’s legal status.

The hemp provision in the new Farm Bill allows hemp to be legally “cultivated for any use,” including the production and extraction of CBD. It also means that you can legally use and buy CBD oil, without a doctor’s recommendation or prescription.

Nature's Ultra is unlike any other CBD on the market today. Not only is it 100% THC-free CBD derived from organically-grown hemp, but it is also grown and processed in the USA. Nature's Ultra is also gluten-free, vegan, and rigorously tested to ensure it does not contain any harmful ingredients.

You can see the proof by scanning the QR code on every product label!

Because of Nature's Ultra commitment to quality, it is the only CBD on the market to receive the prestigious Seed to Seal® guarantee from Young Living™. www.seedtoseal.com

Why use cbd oil?

You may be wondering the benefits of this powerful product. Science has a lot to say on this topic. One thing to consider when researching CBD oil is whether the study looks at CB1 or CB2 receptors. If a study is only looking at CB1 receptors, then the product they are testing is medical marijuana and the cannabinoid THC. Some studies test CBD and THC together to see the synergistic benefits of the combination on the body while others just test CBD.

It is important to remember that CB1 receptors primarily affect the central nervous system and the brain. CB2 receptors mainly affect the digestive and immune systems, as well as the peripheral nervous system. This means CBD can have a supportive effect on these parts of the body and can be used for daily maintenance. Many people have reported a decrease in their symptoms when using CBD daily, especially for supporting an individual with chronic health issues.

Because of the impact on the digestive system, CBD can increase serotonin and thereby increase mood and reduce occasional anxiety. This is a common symptom many women experience after giving birth, due to fluctuating hormones. CBD can also be used topically to soothe sore muscles and joints and to support a healthy skeletal system.

concentration & application

CBD is a versatile product that can be used in many different ways. Before dosing CBD oil for yourself, it is important to decide which application method will be best for your specific needs. Some application methods are more effective than others at targeting specific issues.

topical application

This method can be used for things like skin support and muscle or joint support. The CBD absorbs into the skin. However, very little, if any, absorbs into the bloodstream. It can be used by itself or partnered with oral application for an even bigger impact. CBD isolate can be mixed into lotions, creams, and salves for topical usage.

Dosage

For most people starting a CBD regimen, it is best to start with a smaller amount and work your way up, increasing incrementally until you find your optimal dose. It is more important to take the product consistently than it is to take larger doses infrequently. Most individuals can start out with 5 drops (1/4 dropper) twice a day for a week. After this, the amount can be increased to 10 drops (1/2 dropper) twice a day for one to two weeks. The amount can be adjusted up or down based on your specific needs.

Can I use CBD on my kids?

CBD is non-intoxicating and has shown to have no serious side effects, which is why many feel comfortable using CBD on all of their family members, including children and seniors.

Can I use CBD is I am pregnant or nursing?

Breastmilk has been shown to contain naturally occurring cannabinoids and many pregnant and nursing mamas feel safe using Nature’s Ultra CBD.

As with any supplementation, please do what you are comfortable with.

using the pet cbd to create your own combination

The Pet CBD oil isn’t just for pets. It is unflavored to ensure it’s safety for pets, however it is the same CBD Isolate without any essential oils added in. To increase the impact of CBD isolate for yourself, therapeutic grade essential oils can be added or used in combination. As with CBD dosing, you want to consider the application method that would make the most sense for your health needs. A good reference book for essential oils can help you to see which terpene-rich oils might be best for your specific needs and how to apply them. Therapeutic grade essential oils can be used in a similar way as CBD.

Therapeutic grade essential oils can be applied directly to the skin. They can be used for skin support, muscle and joint support, and relaxation. Some oils may create a warm sensation on the skin and are best diluted with a carrier oil when applied. It is best to dilute oils when applying to young children as well. If you use essential oils with your CBD oil topically, the MCT oil in the CBD will act as a carrier oil. Using the carrier oil will increase absorption of the essential oils.

Young Living Vitality oils can be used internally taken in capsules, added to food or drinks, placed under the tongue, or taken in oil-infused supplements. When taken with CBD, the essential oils will increase the effect of the CBD. For example, orange vitality can be taken with CBD to boost immunity, increase mood, support heart health, and aid in relaxation.
